Rory Jaros, chair builder

Making Hickory Bark Cane

Rory has chosen to use locally grown hickory bark in a sustainable way to make his chairs.

Bark is harvested from trees that would normally go to waste. The process starts by removing bark from Hickory trees in the spring as the sap must be flowing to harvest a useable bark.

By sawing the bark on his electric band saw, he is able to produce a rough version of cane. Finishing to the proper size and texture is achieved by utilizing old-style hand tools.

The cane is then dried and stored ready to be crafted into an heirloom rocking chair.
